The disease or habit which we term as stammering is in fact a habit of speaking with pauses. This is not a physical disorder by birth but because of shortened breath in the childhood due to some of the following reasons:
- Physical weakness due
to some illness.
- Some fear.
- Imitating a stammerer.
- Accident or some mishappening.
Due to short breath,
a person starts speaking with pauses and interruptions
(as speech develops from breath). He does not want to
speak with pauses. But since he is not aware of the
actual cause of these pauses, he tries to speak out
more words in that short breath. This results in the
abnormal increase in the speed of speech. Speaking more
in short breath causes stammering and it becomes a habit.
This is “Stammering”
Psychology: If a
person regularly stammers from childhood, it casts an
impression in his mind also. While speaking, a thought
occurs in his mind that he speaks with pauses. This
fear further aggravates his problem. This is “Psychology”.
Some persons give more attention to this problem. Some
words, which are frequently used, cause more problems
to them due to high speed. They consider these words
as problematic.
A stammerer
will always try to speak fluently. While speaking, he
has two options either to speak out these problematic
words with pauses or substitute these with some other
words. For example, if a person has selected “P”
as a problematic alphabet and he is to speak out “P-P-P-Pani”
(Water), he will substitute it with “Jal”
(Water). This act increases the psychology in his mind
and so the depth of stammering. He keeps on stammering
through out his life.
Stammering is of one kind but its depth varies from
person to person. A person, who gives more thought and
attention to this problem, will have more depth, whereas,
a person who does not care much about the problem will
have less depth.
